Coming soon

Blimey: those nice people at the British Film Institute appear to have come up trumps again, with the release of the complete works of uber-documentary maker Humphrey Jennings:


This extraordinary man was the finest documentary maker Britain has ever produced (and, since the documentary is probably the area of film-making at which Britain is world-leading, that makes him one of the world's best). He died in 1950, still just in his early 40s, a huge loss to cinema. The vast majority of his films have not been available until now. I can't tell you how much I am looking forward to this DVD/Blu-ray release.

    Believe it or not, they are available in The Colonies and I have obtained same. :-)

    My pleasure.

    There's actually another glorious-looking BFI Blu-ray coming out shortly which is the first ever high-definition print of what is, unquestionably, the most famous British documentary ever: Night Mail.

    What's really interesting is that it appears in a package that includes an even earlier Soviet film about the railways, and then a host of British films which were apparently inspired by it. Sounds intriguing!

    Am hugely looking forward to this and will doubtless give it masses of space on here when I see it!
