Blood red

Rather cleverly seguing his True Blood success into a movie role, Ryan Kwanten stars in Red Hill.

It's that delicious but now rather neglected genre, the Australian Western. Set in the vast, deserted expanses of the Outback, Kwanten's city-boy policeman has been transplanted to an environment in which he is very much a fish out of water.

The locals are strange, hostile, and appear to share some bond.

The film progresses pretty much as you'd expect, notwithstanding a bit of panther-based hokum, but for my taste there's far too much emphasis on horror gore. Westerns are not about the gore, but about the fight between good and evil. Red Hill is jolly enough though, after last year's triumphant True Grit,  you can't help a feeling that it could have been so much better.
