This is a pioneering electric locomotive -- by British Thomson-Houston with Brush Engineering, based on designs by the US General Electric company, and commissioned by the North Eastern Railway Company in 1903:
I've extensively photographed this, but it's always a joy to encounter someone else's shots (this is not mine), especially since the National Railway Museum moves their stock around quite a lot so, often, someone else will have a much better view. Electric no. 1 (later ES1, then later still Class 27 no. 001), now stored at the Locomotion museum in Shildon, is one of my favourite locomotives.
