That bastion of Commie propaganda the New York Times has produced a lovely graphic that explains how society has gone down the toilet (it's referring to US society, but the same applies to the UK). You're going to have to click to enlarge:

Society is becoming more polarised, which inevitably leads to increases in crime, anti-social behaviour and, ultimately, rioting. I read a startling statistic the other day -- no idea if the numbers are true (it was unsourced) though it fits with the direction of travel: in 1970, the poorest half of the UK population owned 12% of the total national wealth. Today, the same group owns 1% of the total wealth.
