I have no reason to post these two images other than the fact that I stumbled across them yesterday and would like to share.
They show, of course, the Woodhead electrics, Britain's first all-electric mainline, electrified at 1500v DC, connecting Manchester and Sheffield across the bleak, barren mountains of the Pennines.
The Woodhead Line was all grunt and power, a manly, no-nonsense railway operated in some of the most unpleasant conditions that Britain can throw-up. Which is very unpleasant indeed. I have a strong romantic attachment to this railway.
