Quintessentially English

When I was a very small boy, one of my favourite books was, without question, Paddington Bear:

For reasons too cloying to go into here, I found myself re-reading the very first book earlier today -- still with the original delightful illustrations, by Peggy Fortnum. But I have to say I was shocked to find it had been "modernised" -- set firmly in the late 1950s, the children suddenly started talking about "fifty pence". No, no, no: it should be shillings and pennies.

Later on they discussed pocket money and decided everyone should get a pound each. What? That was almost a weekly wage in the late 1950s!

Once I'd got over that shock, I found the book as charming as I remembered. And, to prove I'm not an old fart who doesn't like change, I even like the more recent colour illustrations produced by an American...

Or perhaps that should be "color".

Anyway, that's probably just as well since I've just discovered a startling fact: twice as many readers of this blog are based in the USA as in the UK.

I don't know quite what to make of that. But I'll make something of it and get back to you...

This Texas reader is here because of the refreshing variety in body types and winkie size!

Also because I am a fan of architecture, and your focus on train stations is delightful!

It's like getting a dose of culture with my porn - Does that make me an enlightened lech?

Could it be due to the fact that there about five times as many people in the USA as in the UK? So Britain comes out ahead in the PoP table (% of population).

Whatever; thanks for all the fish - and peni and trains and everything.

David Chappell: My pleasure. I had thought of the "per head of population" thing but much of what I write about is very English and parochial, so it struck me as strange. Or maybe that's the attraction, what do I know?

Rob in Ft Worth: You're not alone. Currently, the third most frequent search term from which people land on my blog is "high class porn".

I like that!
