Best known as the eponymous star of the blood & sex tv series Spartacus, a role he grabbed from Kirk Douglas and made wholly his own, he died after a fight with cancer that lasted a year and a half.
Apparently a man of some gentle charm in stark contrast to his screen presence as a pugnacious fighter (I guess that's why they call it "acting"), he'll be sorely missed.
